Area Converter
Work out how big a space is in different units - switch a floor, garden or plot of land between square metres, square feet, acres and hectares.
About the Area Converter
This tool converts a surface area between metric and imperial units, including square millimetres, square metres, hectares and square kilometres alongside square inches, square feet, square yards, acres and square miles. It is built for everyday land, room and floor-plan figures rather than abstract geometry.
How to use it
- Type the area you know into its field, for example a room in square metres.
- Read the equivalent in square feet, acres or hectares.
- Enter values in any unit to convert in the opposite direction.
A typical use is comparing a property listed in square feet against one in square metres, or sizing a garden in acres versus hectares. A handy benchmark: 1 hectare is 10,000 square metres, while 1 acre is about 4,047 square metres, so roughly 2.47 acres make a hectare. Because area scales with the square of length, doubling a room's dimensions quadruples its area. The converter works locally in your browser and stores nothing you enter.
Frequently asked questions
How many square feet are in a square metre?
One square metre equals about 10.764 square feet. This comes from squaring the length conversion, since one metre is 3.28084 feet and 3.28084 squared is 10.764.
How many acres are in a hectare?
One hectare equals about 2.471 acres. A hectare is 10,000 square metres, while an acre is roughly 4,047 square metres.
How big is an acre in square feet?
An acre is exactly 43,560 square feet. It originally represented the area a yoke of oxen could plough in a day.
Why does area not double when I double the length?
Area depends on two dimensions, so it scales with the square of a length change. Doubling both the width and height of a space multiplies its area by four, not two.
