About the Tip Calculator
This calculator works out a gratuity on a restaurant or service bill and, if you are dining as a group, splits the total evenly between everyone. It takes the bill amount, applies your chosen tip percentage, and shows the tip, the grand total and each person's share so nobody has to do mental arithmetic at the table.
How to use it
- Enter the bill amount before the tip.
- Enter the tip percentage, for example
18or20. - Enter the number of people sharing the bill.
- See the tip, the total and the per-person amount.
Tipping norms vary widely: in the United States 15 to 20 percent is common for table service, while in many other countries a small tip or none at all is expected. Check whether a service charge is already on the bill so you do not tip twice. This tool tips on the pre-tax amount unless you include tax in the figure you enter. It runs entirely in your browser and nothing is uploaded.
Frequently asked questions
How much should I tip at a restaurant?
In the United States, 15 to 20 percent of the bill is typical for sit-down table service, with 20 percent for good service. Customs differ by country, so adjust to local norms.
How do I split a bill with a tip among friends?
Add the tip to the bill, then divide the total by the number of people. Enter the bill, tip percent and headcount and this calculator shows each person's equal share.
Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?
Either is acceptable, but many people tip on the pre-tax subtotal. This calculator applies the tip to whatever bill amount you enter, so include or exclude tax as you prefer.
What if a service charge is already included?
If the bill already lists a service charge or gratuity, an extra tip is optional. Check the receipt to avoid tipping twice.
